Padmananabhan (Babu) Pillai is a research computer scientist with interests in low-power embedded devices, real-time systems, and general operating systems areas. He is currently a Senior Researcher at Intel Research Pittsburgh, where he is involved in a future-looking project to define technologies for telepresence and synthetic reality, involving the real-time rendering and moving of physical objects in three-dimensions, using programmable materials composed of micro-scale robots. In addition, he has been involved in the development of Internet-scale sensor network technologies, and the storage and retrieval of distributed archives of rich media, which includes mechanisms to acquire, manage, and store high-bandwidth, high-fidelity data on embedded sensor nodes.
